Design trends. How do you feel about them?
To be honest, I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with them. While it’s intriguing to see fresh new ideas in the home decor and design world, I struggle with the idea of changing out pieces frequently just to keep up with the “trends” of the day.
This is why I typically advocate for stick to classic, timeless pieces for the major investment items (furniture, tile, large scale lighting), and I’ll add in a trendy decor piece here and there if it really speaks to me.

There’s no problem following a trend if it feels true to you. And definitely no problem admiring the look of the moment, while also knowing it’s not for you. Take what you love, and leave the rest.
That being said, here are the looks that are peaking my interest right now:
The 5 Hot Design Trends
1. Fluted Details
From furniture to lighting, to wall treatments, fluted details are popping up everywhere these days, from high-end retailers to do-it-yourselfers. It adds intricate detail to a space, while still feeling sleek and minimal.

A bit of chameleon, fluted details lend themselves especially well to modern, boho, or minimalist spaces.
Not to say they can’t look equally as lovely in traditional spaces too – for example, this Crate and Barrel sconce would be stunning in a powder room paired with intricately patterned wallpaper or jewel-toned paint.
2. Patterned Wallpapers
Wallpaper is having a moment right now. No longer relegated to stuffy old homes or your grandma’s living room, wallpaper is suddenly chic and lends a high-end & sophisticated look to any space.
Not ready to commit to a fully wallpapered room? Try a a soft pattern or a bolder one in a small space like a powder room (always a fantastic space to try a bold look), or above wainscotting.
3. Drum Coffee Tables
Drum coffee tables command attention in a room, yet don’t feel too trendy that they will be dated in just a few months. You can find them widely available in a variety of materials from wood to concrete, metal to rattan.
Pair a drum coffee table with legged furniture (as seen above) to ensure the room does not feel too heavy.

4. Earthy Tones
To be fair, earthy tones are certainly nothing cutting edge – I’d even consider them a staple almost-neutral.
Often though, design swings back and forth between two opposites, as is the case with warm, earthy tones replacing cool greys as the “in” colours of the moment. Grey is out, beige is in.
Think warm woods, greige that leans more beige, clay tones, muted greens and soft ochre paired with warm whites.
If you prefer neutral over deep earth tones, combine neutral toned furniture and walls with warm wood in varying tones. This stunning space combines 4 wood elements in different finishes and shapes to amp up the cozy factor in an otherwise minimal space.
Soothing and warm, earthy tones create a sense of calm and connection with natural elements – couldn’t we all use a little more of that?
5. Sculptural Table Lamps
Lamps are no longer just functional, they’ve transformed into a statement piece all on their own. Think sculptural shapes and unexpected materials such as linen, concrete and rattan.
