The change of seasons is upon us, and while I’ll always be a summer girl at heart (hello, beach days & rosé), there is something so comforting about the arrival of fall colours and evenings spent curled up with a good book in hand, a cozy throw & a soothing candle burning.
I’m not one for huge seasonal decor changes, I like to keep things simple and I reeeeally don’t need any more off-season things to store. Ya know?
Trust me when I say, just a few super simple updates will bring in that cozy fall vibe, without breaking the bank or filling up your storage area.

5 SIMPLE WAYS TO UPDATE YOUR HOME FOR FALL
1. ADD IN COZY TEXTURE
LAYER ON THE THROW BLANKETS
Throw blankets are the MVP of the fall/winter months. Put these babies everywhere – draped on armchairs, tossed over the couch back, layered on your bed, rolled in baskets. “But Carly you just said you like to keep decor minimal?!” You’ve got me there, but throw blankets are an exception. We all have our vices okay?

SWAP IN TEXTURED PILLOW COVERS
For throw pillows think varied materials and patterns. I love vintage rug, kilim, & velvet pillow covers to really amp up the cozy vibe.
Purchase great pillow inserts & covers separately and you’ll have a repertoire of covers you can switch out. They are small to store – sometimes I even put the new cover right over the existing cover! No need to store the “off season” pillow cover elsewhere. I use two sets of covers, one for Spring/Summer, one for Fall/Winter, which I switch out only twice a year, in addition to the neutral year-round throw pillows in my home.
2. DRIED & FAUX FLORALS
While I strongly prefer fresh florals, IMO Fall is when dried and faux stems have their moment.
Reach for tones of rust, beige, burgundy, or brown – green stems scream Spring, so let the warmer tones take centre stage for Fall.
DRIED FLORALS
Dried limelight hydrangea or statice flowers are maintenance-free and beautiful. Oversized branch arrangements are statement-making & long lasting. If you can’t snip a few from your own yard, a neighbours, or the roadside, I’ve rounded up a few great options for you.

3. GO ALL-IN ON LAMPS
Do not underestimate the simple addition of a lamp to create a cozy & soothing environment! It really is the magic trick for not only elevating the look of a room, but the feel of the space too.
TABLE LAMPS
Ideally, each room should have at least 3 light sources, especially so for lounging spaces (living room, bedroom) where you spend your time relaxing. Think layers of lighting. I suggest putting your overhead lighting on a dimmer switch & adding 1-3 lamps throughout the room (wall sconces are another great addition for layered lighting!) to create a serene & inviting mood.

4. SWAP OUT YOUR ART
Seriously this is so simple but makes a big impact in the vibe of your space. What I recommend is sourcing a few frames (I love the character of thrifted vintage frames) & using these as your “seasonal” art frames. I have a few throughout the house which I switch out 2-3 times a year.
Both vintage & modern art are readily available online, and a lot of it is free. Checkout useum.org for an incredibly deep source of vintage copyright free artworks sourced from museums around the world – but be forewarned you’ll be searching a fair bit to find pieces you like!
If you’d like to cut out the searching step, there are so many beautifully curated shops selling both physical & digital download prints. Digital prints are incredibly affordable – we’re talking under $5 a piece. You can even find complete gallery wall sets if you want to hit the easy button for creating a gallery wall in your home. My go-to sources are North Prints, Heirloom Print Shop, & Juniper Print Shop.
When printing digital art, look for matte paper or cardstock, ideally with a textured linen-like finish or have them printed on canvas at your local print shop.
Pro tip for re-using art prints from the previous seasons – slide them behind the new print & just leave them in the frame, no storage required 😉
5. CANDLES
Candles for Fall? Revolutionary! ha. I know, but its cliche for a reason. Stock up, the days are only getting shorter from now til March (sorry to be the bearer of bad news). I love wood-wick candles as they crackle & invoke the feel of a wood burning fire (no chimney required).
Get yourself some aesthetic candles & they double as decor. Place them on top of a few stacked coffee table books, or in a tray paired with a vase of florals & a pretty decorative object (I love this wooden link) for fool-proof coffee table styling.
