As the weather warms, aren’t we all dreaming of leisurely days in the yard, enjoying a cocktail (or mocktail) and soaking up those fleeting summer days?
Our backyard makeover is scheduled for the fall, so I’m currently sourcing and find inspiration on which design direction I’ll take with our outdoor furniture. Good quality patio furniture is an investment to be sure, but the price is money well spent in terms of quality and longevity.
HOW TO CREATE A STYLISH OUTDOOR LOUNGE AREA
When I’m looking for exterior furniture my goal is always to make it feel like an extension of the home. Take your design style to the outdoors, and don’t forget to include the decor pieces you would incorporate inside – side tables, coffee tables, throw pillows and blankets, potted plants, and perhaps a fireplace if you have the space for it. While I believe outdoor furniture lends itself well to sets (without looking as monotonous as sets look indoors), certainly do not be afraid to combine a sofa with two different armchair (different from the couch – I would have the chairs match!).
Without further ado, here’s the exterior lounge furniture that I’m crushing on this season:

CB2 BRETON SOFA
The CB2 Breton line manages to feel classic and fresh at the same time. My favourite thing about it though is that while it makes a statement with it’s beautiful curved lines, it doesn’t command too much attention and allows the landscape to be the star of the backyard.
This collection looks utterly chic in almost any backyard aesthetic. See how it lends itself well to a more traditional garden courtyard (above) and a sleek modern poolside vibe (below)?
WEST ELM PORTSIDE COLLECTION
If you’re after a California-cool vibe, this is definitely it. In addition to its statement making structure, I was immediately drawn to the fact that those arms are going to be perfect for resting a drink. In my world, patio season and rosé season are interchangeable, so no surprise I’m loving this feature.
SERENA & LILY PACIFICA COLLECTION
Take wicker furniture, make it elegant and modern, and you’ve got the Pacifica collection from Serena & Lily. It’s evoking alllll the seaside vibes, and if that doesn’t scream summer, I don’t know what does.
If you’ve got an ocean view like above look no further for your patio lounge furniture, and if you want to bring a bit of that feeling to your non-seaside porch take these pieces and pair with subtle cool blues, crisp whites and stripes for that beach-side vibe.
POTTERY BARN
Pottery Barn is knocking it out of the park in terms of outdoor furniture this season. I’m currently coveting not one, not two, but three pieces from their outdoor collections. If only I had the outdoor space to accommodate them all.
TORREY SOFA
You can’t go wrong with the current but classic look of the Torrey sofa line. Both the sleek sectional and the extra-long couch can accommodate group of friends for all your patio season gatherings.
INDIO COLLECTION
If you are short on space, this collection makes a stunning statement with a small footprint. It is made from beautiful FSC certified eucalyptus wood (just another way to incorporate the perennial decor favourite into your home). If you are shopping with your environmental footprint in mind, this is worth a look.
The lines are compact yet big on style. And how perfect is that wood tone, amiright?
TORREY DOUBLE CHAISE LOUNGER
If you’re looking for a spot to lounge the day away in the sun (and who isn’t?!), how perfect is this chaise lounge? The only decision you’ll need to make with this double chaise is if you’ll share it or luxuriate in all it’s glorious space by yourself.
I don’t know about you, but after cruising through those beautifully curated outdoor spaces I’m feeling super inspired for the possibilities of what an exterior lounge space can be.
Take your interior sense of style and make your exterior an extension of it. Sure, the summer season may be short (at least here in Canada!), but isn’t it what we live for all year long? Leisurely days spent lounging outdoors is what the season is all about.
Might as well do it in style.
